I want to thank Manor Road United for having me back to preach the Old Testament, on behalf of Professor Hye-Ran Kim-Cragg’s Homiletics course at Emmanuel College. Today I am talking about an obscure passage from the Hebrew Bible: Exodus 18:1-12, which involves the visit from Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, along with Moses’ wife Zipporah and Moses’ children Gerschom and Eliezar. Not a very well-known figure from the Bible, Jethro is described as a “Priest of the tribe of Midian”, which doesn’t necessarily mean he was a religious leader, but possibly more of an administrative official. Many questions need to be answered here: who is Jethro? Who is Zipporah? Who are Gerschom and Eliezar? And why does any of this matter? Let us see.
