We are the Whirlwind
I remember a whirlwind in Saskatchewan, it was a great big cloud , at first glance, the thought that was a rain cloud, that was so desperately needed at the time, at second glance it was a brown dust cloud, rising 500 m or 1500 ft in the air.
In the text Elijah is taken up in a whirlwind, we are taken up in a whirlwind. Elijah is the prophetic bridge between yesterday, today and the days to come. Elijah is an era of leadership meeting succession. We witness the infinite God confronts the fine humanity.
There is departure, encounter, unrelenting perseverance, in the lasting and everlasting relationship.
Elisha proclaims, “ I will not leave you!”. Elisha call out to grief, to vulnerability. It is the event of God unbound, in the crossing of the Jordan. It is the God time, in the always right time, not in bondage to any clock.
In the whirlwind, we listen to Paul, “Let light shine out of darkness”. In the death and life, evil comes to an end. Catastrophe no more, God’s realm is revealed.
In the whirlwind, they are led up the mountain by Jesus, to the who, the what, and where, to restore in the redivivus of Elijah. The John the Baptist is the voice in the then that breaks into the now of today.
This is Jesus listen to him.
Who is my neighbourhood?
Transport us to the many theophany’s, in the kaleidoscope of faith communities, the sanctuaries, the safe places for members and seekers, Jesus identity, in the whirlwind, call us to be discipling from the heart and core of living compassion
